Population is around 53,500, comprising 22,725 households. Average property price (Apr-June 2013) is £218,466, with average annual earnings of £16,029. Principle areas of employment are Wholesale and Retail work 14.68%, Manufacturing 12.33% and Health and Social Work 12.03%. Workers on the land account for less than 8% of employment in the district.
Bordering Cornwall to the west and Plymouth and the South Hams to the south, it is an area covering 1160 sq miles, of which 45% lies in the Dartmoor National Park. The district also includes 36 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), part of the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. Principle towns include Tavistock, Okehampton, Hatherleigh, North Tawton, Princetown, Moretonhampstead and Chagford.
